Kangaroo Island, After The Fires🔥

As Coronavirus lock downs take effect here in Australia we are spending more time than ever reflecting on our life journey together and (as always) continuously evolving our plan. We will keep you posted as our revised plan takes shape.

Earlier this month we did a day trip to Kangaroo Island (KI) and it reminded me of three things:

  1. Seeing the destruction of the recent bush fires produces deep emotions ranging from stunning to shocking.

  2. Our current home in Normanville, South Australia has amazing activities nearby.

  3. Ferry’s on an ocean can be very very very rough and nausea inducing!

Australia Grandma & Grandpa came with us so we had a full car and a fun day.

We drove 30 mins from Normanville to Cape Jervis and caught the 9am ferry. The ferry crosses the often bumpy “Backstairs Passage” ocean to Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island. It was bumpy and rolling. We were beyond glad to reach land and it was a quiet first hour in the car as we all took some time to recover from varying degrees of motion sickness.

The story of Kangaroo Island today, the story we experienced, is one of incredible devastation. Offset ever so slightly by the signs of new green shoots, homes amazingly saved while surrounded by total fire destruction, and new road signs along freshly cleared (but scorched) country roads.

The fire destruction still dominates. Hundreds of kilometers of charred ground, bushes and trees. You see an entire color range of fire damage in nature that I didn’t previously grasp. The variations we saw reflected the varied landscape and the different characteristics of the fires that had burned across the island.

It was a day of exploration and we certainly learned a lot. We were happy that the 5:30pm ferry back to Cape Jervis was a lot smoother and that made the drive home a lot more comfortable.

The pictures do a better job than my words ever can to capture this experience.

A family day. An emotional day.
